Privacy & Data

Smileinator is built around one simple promise: your camera stays on your device.

Who is responsible

Smileinator (the "Service") is operated by Smileinator, which acts as the data controller for personal data processed through the Service. Payments are handled by our reseller Paddle.com, who is the Merchant of Record and a recipient of order-related personal data (name, email, billing address, payment details) for the purposes of processing your purchase, subscription management, invoicing and tax compliance. See Paddle's privacy notice.

Your camera, on your device

The smile detection runs entirely in your browser using on-device machine learning (Google MediaPipe). Video frames from your camera are analysed locally and discarded immediately — they are never uploaded, recorded, or sent to our servers, and we have no way to see your face.

  • • No video, photos or audio leave your device
  • • No frames are stored, even temporarily, on a server
  • • You can revoke camera access any time from your browser settings

What we store if you sign in

When you create an account (email, Google or Apple) we store the minimum needed to power your stats, momentum and group leaderboards:

  • Profile: a display name and your account ID
  • Smile sessions: a timestamp and the duration in seconds for each completed session
  • Aggregated stats: total sessions, total seconds, momentum, XP and level, longest single smile, sessions today
  • Groups: groups you create or join, plus the 6-character invite code

We do not store any biometric data, facial landmarks, smile scores or frame snapshots — only the fact that a session of a given length was completed.

What stays local if you're a guest

You can use Smileinator without signing in. In guest mode your stats are saved only in your browser's localStorage under the key smileinator:guestand never reach our servers. Clearing your browser data wipes them instantly.

We use a small functional cookie / storage entry to keep you signed in if you do create an account, and we may load a Google AdSense banner at the bottom of the page which uses its own cookies — see Google's ad policy.

Deleting your data

You're in control. To remove your data:

  • Guest: clear your browser site data for this site
  • Signed in: sign out, then email us to request account deletion — we'll erase your profile, sessions, stats and group memberships
